Confetti: A virtual screening and discussion with award-winning Director Ann Hu
Join SupChina for a virtual film screening of Confetti. A powerful story about a Chinese family uprooting their lives to seek alternative education in America for a child with dyslexia. Then join the live discussion with Confetti Director Ann Hu to hear why she made the film and how she was inspired by her real-life experience.
Based on writer/director Ann Hu’s, own life experiences, CONFETTI illustrates the journey of a 9-year-old girl named Meimei (Harmonie He), who moves with her mother Lan (Zhu Zhu) from their small town in China to New York City. Meimei has struggled to be accepted in her school and community, in part because no one has successfully noticed that she suffers from dyslexia. Lan braves the move to New York and a job with a new employer (Amy Irving) all in order to help her daughter, but finding the right school — especially for a visiting immigrant — proves to be even more difficult than she could have anticipated.

Ann Hu
Writer, producer, and director Ann Hu's debut Shadow Magic (2000) won both the Chinese Academy Award and Presidential Award in China for Best Film. It was also at Tokyo International Film Festival Nominated for Grand Prix and Best Actor awards; it was at the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan, won the Best Adapted Screenplay and Audience Award, and was nominated for Best Director. The film premiered at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival and was released by Sony Classics in 2001. Following Shadow Magic, Ann Hu produced and directed Beauty Remains. The film was at numerous film festivals and released internationally by Emerging Pictures in 2005.  Confetti is her third feature film based on actual events and her personal story. It had a successful US theatrical release in over 40 cities, and with the help of social media and influencers, the message reached over 15M users. In addition, the film garnered support from Senator James Skoufis to introduce a bill to expand access to care for children with special needs, and Presidential candidate Andrew Yang supported Confetti's 1000 Community Screening Project movement.

Her career began at Goldman Sachs, then Citi where she was a Pacific Basin analyst, then became an Asian Portfolio Manager for both Institutional and Private Wealth Group. Ms. Cheng received her MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of Business. She is a Trustee of the following Boards: Vice-Chair of China/US at TNC (The Nature Conservancy); Facing History and Ourselves(past Chair of China Project); Vice-Chair at China Institute; and past Trustee and current member of Committee 100. Ms. Cheng is also China/ Global Council Member of Brookings and a Member of NCUSCR and Columbia University's China Global Center.
