In 2015 President Obama announced the 1 Million Strong initiative that aimed to bring the total number of stateside learners of Mandarin Chinese to 1 million by the year 2020. “If our countries are going to do more together around the world,” said Obama, “then speaking each other’s language, truly understanding each other, is a good place to start.” So has it happened? At this event, we will hear from several leaders in the Chinese language education space as they talk about their experiences and challenges in Chinese language education in America. They will also help us understand the trends of the Chinese language in America and if the 1 Million Strong initiative has become a reality.

Bonnie Liao

Bonnie Liao is the founder of two nonprofit schools and two nonprofit summer programs. She has served as the general advisor since 2004 for the PCE (Parents and Children Education) Club, a parenting group in New Jersey. Bonnie has been giving EQ Parenting talks and conducting youth leadership training nationwide. Her professional interest is mental and behavioral health for youth and families. As a graduate of Peking University, Bonnie also has a Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of Houston and an MBA in Finance and Managing Information Systems from Rutgers University. In 2019, she became a licensed social worker in clinical psychological counseling.

Dapeng Hu, Ph.D., An executive in a large asset management company during weekdays, Dr. Hu has devoted most of his weekends to Chinese education in local communities. He is a volunteer, co-founder, and former board chairman (2012-2017) of Huaxia Chinese School of Greater New York, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Chinese language and culture education and the largest one of its kind in the Tri-State area. He also served as a board chairman and a board member of Huaxia Chinese School, a system of similar Chinese schools in PA, NJ, NY, and CT. He also served as a principal of the legacy Huaxia Chinese School of New York.

Lucy Chu Lee 竹露茜

Lucy currently teaches AP Chinese at Seton Hall Preparatory School in New Jersey. She was the finalist for ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages）Teacher of the Year in 2013, New Jersey State County Teacher of the Year in 2013-2014, and NECTFL (Northeast Conference for the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Teacher of the Year in 2012. Ms. Lee served on AP Chinese Task Force in 2004 and worked with the AP Chinese Test Development Committee. She is an endorsed College Board Consultant and presents workshops for experienced and new teachers. She worked as a lead instructor at Rutgers University’s STARTALK Teacher Program. Ms. Lee served two years on the National Commission for the AP World Languages Course and Exam Review Project with the College Board. She also served two terms as the president of the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLASS) and co-authored the CLASS Professional Standards for K-12 Chinese Language Teachers. She participated in the NEH/Ohio State NFLRC-funded Guide for Basic Chinese Language Programs and was the co-chair for the national project on the development of the national standards for K-12 Chinese learners.

Hongchen Wu, Ph.D.
武宏琛于2019年10月获得纽约州立大学石溪分校授予的哲学博士学位。她的博士论文题目是“Quantifier Scope in Mandarin”，论文指导老师为Richard Larson （理查德·拉尔森）教授。她本科毕业于吉林大学中文系，获文学学士学位；硕士毕业于北京大学获文学硕士学位（汉语言文字学专业，现代汉语方向）；也曾在哥伦比亚大学教师学院国际外语教师中心Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) 资格证项目学习一年。
她的研究方向为以汉语为主的东亚语言研究，研究兴趣包括句法学、语义学、二语习得以及计算语言学。
Hongchen just finished her doctoral thesis and graduated with a Ph.D. degree from the beloved Linguistics Department, Stony Brook University in December 2019. Her thesis is titled “Quantifier Scope in Mandarin”. She holds an M.A. degree in Chinese Linguistics from Peking University, a B.A. degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Jilin University and a Chinese Teacher Certificate from Teachers College, Columbia University.
