PRIDE Lives On: Determination & Resilience in Queer China
The political landscape is changing quickly in China, and so is local LGBTQ activism. How does the Chinese queer movement respond to the escalating restrictions on civil society? What topics do they most concern themselves with? And what are some of the issues they are now working on as they forge new paths forward despite shrinking opportunities for visible, high profile activity? We talk to LGBTQ researchers, columnists and organizers to understand the state of the queer & allies community in 2022.
Raymond Phang
relocated from his home in Malaysia to Shanghai in 2010 to pursue a degree in Applied Linguistics. As part of the founding team of ShanghaiPRIDE, he established the volunteer management system, managed corporate and foreign consulate partnerships, and led the ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival and Theatre Festival.
Di Wang
Di Wang is a feminist researcher and advocate from China. She is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison USA. Her ten years of experience as a women’s and LGBTQ rights advocate have informed her research, which has been published in Law & Social Inquiry, China Law and Society Review, Qualitative Inquiry, ChinaFile, lambda nordica, and elsewhere.
Nathan Wei
Nathan Wei is a freelance writer and a graduate student based in Vancouver, Canada. His areas of interests include LGBTQ issues, social justice, and policy. He currently writes the column Queer China for SupChina.
Nancy Tang
Nancy Tang (she/they) is a PhD student in Politics at Princeton University. Nancy’s research focuses on gender and sexuality in East Asia, and law and social movements. Before Princeton, Nancy was an immigrants rights advocate for low-income Asian communities int eh United States. Nancy is a proud Chinese feminist and tweets from @NancyYunTang.
