This event is the very first China Corner Office Live Podcast! It will feature the guest speaker and Greater China Chairman for APCO Worldwide, James McGregor, as well as the host of the China Corner Office Podcast Christopher Marquis. On September 30th, they will sit down and discuss how businesses can move forward while facing unprecedented trade tensions and distrust.

James McGregor

James McGregor

James McGregor is Greater China Chairman for APCO Worldwide where he serves as a senior advisor on China business, political and communications strategies for a wide variety of multinational corporations. He is also the author of two highly regarded books: No Ancient Wisdom, No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism; and One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China. As a journalist, McGregor was bureau chief in Taipei and Beijing for The Wall Street Journal. Switching to business, he was CEO of Dow Jones in China and later founded a China-focused research and advisory firm for hedge funds. McGregor also served as chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, National Committee on US-China Relations, Global Council of the Asia Society and is on the board of the US-China Education Trust. He has lived in China for 30 years and usually splits his time between Shanghai and Beijing. Due to COVID and closed borders he is currently working from his Minnesota lake house.

Christopher Marquis

Christopher Marquis

Chris Marquis is the Sinyi Professor of Chinese Management at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. Prior to joining Cambridge, he worked at Cornell and for 10 years at Harvard Business School and has held visiting professorships at Harvard Kennedy School, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Peking University, Fudan University, and Shanghai Jiaotong University. Marquis’ current teaching and research examines how the interaction between corporations, governments and civil society lead to socially and environmentally beneficial outcomes, with a particular focus on China. In the fall of 2022 will publish a new book titled Mao and Markets: The Communist Roots of Chinese Enterprise that examines the unique form of entrepreneurship and market development that has occurred in China over the last 40 years. He received a PhD in sociology and business administration from the University of Michigan.
